A three-day “foreign languages in action” conference opened in Palma yesterday with the focus of this year's XXI language summit being on English, German and French.

Organised by the Balearic Ministry for Education, the Balearic government and Palma Teacher Centre , the three-day cycle of lectures, talks and workshops - one of which is being given by the Majorca Daily Bulletin, is being attended by 300 secondary school and further education teachers from across the Balearics.

The convention was opened yesterday by the Balearic government's director general for Innovation and Teacher Training, Josep Serra and the inauguration was also attended by the British Consul Paul Abrey, United States Consular Agent, Amy Christansen, the editor of the Majorca Daily Bulletin, one of the conference sponsors, Jason Moore and the German and French vice-consuls in the Balearics, Claudia Seidler and Bernard Justin, respectively.

The primary aim of the three-day conference at the Conservatory of Music, is to discuss and devise more efficient ways of teaching foreign languages while providing a regular forum for local and international teachers and language experts to discuss and share their experiences and “know-how”. A number of leading language teaching professionals will be giving lectures on new teaching methods while the participating teachers will be introduced to new teaching materials and technologies. The Daily Bulletin will be holding a workshop on the importance of language in the media and how the newspaper serves the multicultural Balearic community.
