By. H. Carter MOST of the 250 people evacuated from a block of flats in Manacor early yesterday morning after a fire broke out in the underground car park, were back in the comfort of their own home last night but one resident, a 77-year-old man, remained in a Palma clinic in a critical condition.

The alarm was raised just before 7am and fire fighters from four brigades attended the scene while the local police mounted a major evacuation operation.

The fire is understood to have been started by a motorcycle and the flames spread quickly to five neighbouring cars parked under the apartment block.
The building was evacuated as a precaution and the fire was not extinguished until 11am. However, the blaze had not caused any structural damage to the main block of 70 apartments but it completely gutted the car park and also cut water and electricity supplies which were repaired before any of the 250 residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Most residents spent the day in a local school which the council made available to the evacuees and where food and running water was made available. Unfortunately, one of the residents suffered a heart attack and was said to have been in a critical condition last night.

A full investigation into the fire has been opened and police sources revealed that arson is not being ruled out.
Apparently a war of words has been raging between some of the residents for the past few years. This has led to a number of previous incidents at the block of apartments in the des Serral neighbourhood.
