STAFF REPORTER FOR the fifth year running, the Port of Alcudia will be hosting a sepia (cuttlefish) fair, to be held on the weekend of 16 and 17 April. As the sepia is one of the Mediterranean's most popular fish, some 40 restaurants will be subscribing to the event, offering a host of dishes - rice recipes, pizzas, sausages, pastries - which all have one ingredient in common.

The cuttlefish fair will be running at the same time as Alcudia's Boat Show which is also in its fifth year. Around 24 companies are expected to be exhibiting.

A presentation for both events was given yesterday at the Alcudia Fishermen's centre. Giving the occasion a high profile were Merce Amer, the regional Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gabriel Payeras, the President of the Fishermen's Association and Miquel Llompart, the Mayor of Alcudia.

A key driving force behind the launching of the cuttlefish fair is to encourage people to buy local produce. As a means of tackling the crisis in the Balearic farming and fishing industries, the ministry has already set its seal of approval on cataloguing and promoting the sale of food products which were caught, or grown, reared or manufactured in the Balearic Islands.

Sepia catches, said Gabriel Payeras, are expected to be very good this year. Some members of the Fishermen's Association were forecasting yields would be twice as high as in other seasons.
