STAFF REPORTER THE murder of 67-year-old Manuel Sánchez Nuñez at his home in Calle Sant Rafel in Palma by three Bulgarians was described yesterday by Balearic National Police Chief Antoni Cerdà as a “particularly vicious and unjustifiable barbarity”.

At a press briefing yesterday, Cerdà made it clear that the victim would have suffered greatly during his last moments of life whilst his attackers kicked him to death.

The Homicide Squad in the Balearics is meanwhile claiming that the motive of the crime which took place on 27th March was the robbery of jewellery and money.

Investigators who have researched the case thoroughly said that no sooner had police discovered the body in the flat located in the Son Gotleu suburb of Palma, the three men now accused of murder had bought tickets for a boat trip to Barcelona and then headed for their homeland of Bulgaria by coach.

Once in the capital, Sofia, they remained hidden until they were arrested by Bulgarian police. Cerdà said that forensic scientists had worked for hours at the scene of the crime, laboriously separating out finger prints of a large number of young people.

After analysis and identification, and police interviews with more than 20 people, investigators were then left with a clear lead about who might be responsible.

One of the accused had reportedly been a boyfriend of the victim and shared an overcrowded flat in Calle Aragon with many other young people.
As soon as the arrests had been made in Bulgaria, police sealed off and investigated the property finding some items which had belonged to the victim. Security cameras in the Port of Palma also helped identify the culprits.
