STAFF REPORTER RAINFALL in March this year was particularly high, averaging out across the country on an accumulated basis at 68 litres per square metre, but temperatures were “normal” for the time of year, the National Weather Agency (AEMET) reported yesterday.

The month had begun, said the Agency, with cold air sweeping in from the northeast across the mainland and the Balearic Islands. The squall lasted for 10 days, finally giving way to generalised rainfall and snow at high mountain levels.

Heavy rainfall then affected the mainland and the Balearic Islands during the second ten days of March trailing off to make way for a front of relatively warm air, sunny skies and higher temperatures across nearly all regions of the country. The month finally ended with fine weather for the Balearic Islands.

Rainfall had not fallen evenly however, and though March might have been particularly wet in the Balearics, it was notably dry in some other regions such as Cantabria and Galicia.

Temperatures for the month were similarly erratic. Whilst they were normal for season in the Balearics and on average across Spain just 0.1 degrees above expected levels, it proved particularly cold in central mainland areas, the north of Extremadura, some areas of Andalucia and the Canary Islands.

However, the month became progressively warmer after a colder than average start and temperatures were between 2 and 3 degrees above expected levels from the 25th onwards. AEMET reported 30 degrees centigrade on the 31st in the Guadalquivir area of Andalucia.
