By Humphrey Carter PALMA National Police have arrested Majorca's very own Bonnie and Clyde who are alleged to have robbed 15 houses in the area of San Agustin and Cala Major since the start of this year. The National Police confirmed the arrests, which were made on Thursday, and yesterday put on display the assortment of stolen items and equipment used in the break-ins. The couple are Spanish but police have not released their full identities. All they were saying yesterday was that the male suspect is aged 31 and his female accomplice 23. The arrests have come as the result of a long and exhaustive investigation launched at the start of the year. According to the police, the couple were using two apartments, one in San Agustin and the other in Cala Mayor, as the headquarters for their operations. From these apartments they would monitor the activities of neighbours and break-in to their target properties when the owners were either out or away. Police said that the couple would either force the main doors to their properties or, in the case of apartment robberies, use safety harnesses, confiscated by police, to access the flats. Police swooped on one of the couple's apartments on Thursday and the male suspect tried to escape by leaping from the second floor apartment and heading to their other property where his partner was waiting. However, both suspects were arrested as a result of simultaneous raids and a hoard of stolen objects recovered. National Police sources said that apart from DVD players, cameras, mobile phones, watches, laptop computers and expensive jewellery, a large quantity of hashish was found as well as the tools of their trade. What is more, the police investigation into the spate of robberies remains open and further arrests may be made over the next few days.
