WHILE the number of immigrants into the Balearic Islands continues to increase, its emigrant population is often overlooked. People of the Balearics have a long record of emigrating when times are hard, and at the moment, the United Kingdom is the most popular European country.

According to the latest electoral census, a total of 10'429 Balearic citizens living abroad are eligible to vote in the elections of May 27. Most of the emigrants originally come from Palma (4'695), followed by Ibiza town (577), and closly followed by Ciutadella in Minorca (420). On Majorca, after those who originated from Palma, Manacor, Sóller and Felanitx had the highest number of residensts currently living abroad. The most popular country by far for Balearic residents to relocate to seems to be Argentina with 3'349 Balearic immigrants. The United Kingdom is the second most popular country for relocators where 707 currently reside, followed closely by Germany (624), Venezuala (679), France (675) and the USA (473). It's not just Europe and the Americas, though, where Balearic residents may be found.

There are eligible voters in countries such as Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam and Kuwait.
There are also residents in the Phillipines (50), Japan (14) and at least 44 people born in the Balearics currently live in Australia.
While the May elections may be for local governments, it just shows that they are more international than they may seem at first glance.
