THE Balearic ministry of immigration headed by Encarnación Pastor of the Partido Popular (PP) has been holding talks with British and German residents in Pollensa.

Up to now, two meetings have been held, attended by some 300 people, who were told that a ministry exclusively for immigrants from European Union countries would be set up if the PP wins the May 27 elections.

The names, addresses and telephone numbers of those attending the meetings were noted down for future use.
The ministry has been holding similar meetings with residents of different nationalities around the island, although this was the first time that there was talk of a special ministry just for EU residents.

Although the PP has denied that these meetings are not “vote catchers” they have been widely criticised by the other political parties.
The immigration ministry works closely with foreign immigration associations, and also on behalf of Balearic residents who have emigrated abroad.
At the moment, the ministry is arranging for the twinning of Pollensa with Rosario in Argentina.
Once again, the opposition claims that this is to seek votes, as 134 Argentines (more than 50 of them from Rosario) have the right to vote in Pollensa.

The chairman of the Balearic Regional House in Rosario visited Pollensa recently to start the twinning process. Despite the misgivings of some of the parties, nobody voted against the move.

Regional Houses can be found in most South American cities with a sizeable population of Balearic origin and they receive considerable support from the ministry. They help preserve the use of Catalan and Balearic customs.
