THREE people died in traffic accidents in the Balearics over the Easter holiday, two of them under the age of 35, according to the Provincial Traffic authority.

This was one death less than Easter last year.
A total of 102 people died in 80 fatal accidents on Spanish roads over Easter, between 3pm on Friday March 20, and midnight on Sunday, the traffic authorities said.

The figure for 2005 was 100.
Most of the motoring associations in Spain said that the high death toll indicated “failure” of the steps taken not only by traffic headquarters but also by drivers and regional administrations.

A spokesman said that the introduction of the points-system on driving licences had “raised epxectations” but had not had the required effect because it had not been accompanied by other measures.

He added that 45 per cent of the victims had not been wearing a seat belt or crash helmet, and 80 per cent of drivers had admitted being tired at the wheel.

Many of the accidents were attributed to speeding.
