STAFF REPORTER A 25-year-old woman has been killed and a 50-year-old man seriously injured in a head-on collision between two cars on the road between Inca and Sineu, reported the Emergency services yesterday.

The crash apparently took place between 11.20pm and 11.35pm on Friday night about 100 metres from the roundabout by Inca hospital. The Guardia Civil said that the two vehicles involved, neither of which carried passengers, were a Chevrolet Captiva and an Opel Astra. A first assessment of the accident claimed that one of the drivers had apparently been distracted whilst searching for a mobile telephone on the passenger seat and as a result, careered into the oncoming lane. Speedometers showed that the Opel had been travelling at 110 kmh and the Chevrolet at 80kmh.

The same sources said that after the arrival of paramedics, firemen and police at the scene, the 50-year-old was taken to Inca hospital in a critical condition. However, the Majorcan fire service had to use cutting tools to free the body of the victim who had died at the scene of the accident and remained trapped inside her vehicle.
