FORTY TWO hotels in the Playa de Palma area were unable to provide guests with hot water or hot food after an excavator working on a site in Coll den Rabassa broke a gas pipe on Monday. Normal service was not restored until yesterday morning. The accident affected supplies in Portitxol, Molinar, Coll den Rabassa, Can Pastilla, Arenal and Son Veri.
Many restaurants and thousands of residents and tourists were also hit by the cuts, and many of the tourists in hotels in Can Pastilla and Arenal have already complained to their tour operators. The actual pipe was repaired shortly before 9pm on Monday, but workers then had to reopen 500 valves manually to allow supplies to be restored slowly, an operation which continued into the early hours of yesterday morning. Up to 60 GESA-Endesa (the power company) workers were mobilised working in collaboration with the hotel maintenance services.
GESA-Endesa is now studying the possibility of seeking damages from the company responsible for the breakdown.
