STAFF REPORTER MAJORCAN lawyer, Rafael Perera said yesterday that he will no longer be representing ex Balearic President Jaume Matas in court hearings related to the “Palma Arena” corruption scandal.

The move by Perera, which he said was for “professional reasons” came 10 days after Matas' other lawyer, Madrid-based Manuel Ollé, did the same.
Perera, who has been defending Matas in the case since the outset, said in a brief statement that his decision to leave had been reached by mutual consent with the ex President.

A formal change of lawyer is shortly to be arranged, said Perera, adding that he “felt confident” that Matas would be able to continue “showing that he was innocent” in whatever further court hearings related to the “Palma Arena” case were still to come. The investigation into the alleged scandal has been split up into 25 separate cases.

Auditors are examining the high overspend on the construction of the velodrome in Palma, the personal fortune which Matas amassed during his term of office as President as well as other possible mis-use of public funds by the Partido Popular of which Matas was head.
