Palma.—There was further evidence of a great start to the summer season yesterday with the announcement that the number of tourists flying into the Balearics on the so-called “low cost airlines” rose by 14 percent last month.

An estimated 320'000 tourists headed to our shores on budget airlines with the Balearics being the top destination in Spain for “no frills” passengers.
Obviously last month also included the busy Easter period but local tourism officials are impressed that the summer season got off to such a great start.

There was further good news on the tourist front yesterday with the announcement that hotels in Magalluf and Palmanova are already fully booked for next month led by a surge in holiday sales in Britain. Local hoteliers are so concerned they have asked tour firms to stop selling because they fear cases of overbooking.

A spokesperson for the hotels federation said yesterday: “we are very pleased that there has been such a large demand for holidays in the Calvia area in Britain.” Magalluf looks on course for another record summer and recent television documentaries do not appear to have dented holiday sales in any way. Infact the reverse has happened.

Earlier this year the BBC screened the controversial documentary The Truth About Magalluf which was slammed by many for showing the resort in a bad light. But tour firms said that the BBC3 programme had in fact helped holiday bookings.

Local hoteliers are confident of a good summer season which would be a perfect tonic for Majorca as it battles the economic hard times. A good summer season would certainly help to put the local economy back on track.
