BALLROOM dancing has taken on a new surge of life in Majorca, thanks to the success of television programmes such as Look Who's Dancing, which has proved to be as popular in Spain as Strictly Come Dancing has been in Britain. And Calvia has not been slow to realise this, organising what the council calls its first Dance Olympics which opens today and continues until Sunday.
There will be a total of 38 competitions for professionals and amateurs which will be held in the Galatzó sports stadium.
The event has attracted more than 2'500 dancers from 40 countries, including the UK and Ireland, the US, Puerto Rico, China, Scandinavia and Hong Kong. In addition to the Olympics, there will be competitions and exhibitions of hip hop in the Casino de Mallorca, salsa in the BCM disco and line dancing in the Western Water Park. There will also be workshops in the Sala Palmanova and the Hotels Mirlos Tordos and Santa Ponsa Park. Complementary to the competition there will be a ballroom dance competition for pensioners from all over the island, which will be held at Galatzo between 10am and 1pm today, and a Fitness Meeting Point for fitness trainers from all over Spain in the Bendinat college. The competition sessions in Galatzo will be open to the public tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday from 10am, with an admission charge of 10 euros per day, except Saturday (15 euros). All the hip hop contestants are from Spain, and they can be seen at the Casino from 9pm, tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Admission six euros per day.
