THE Balearic Government's proposal to establish a maximum price of 27.50 euros for interisland flights ”is in the advanced study stage”.
However, if it is approved, it would not come into force for at least a year because it requires the approval of the European Union, amongst other things. This was confirmed by the Spanish Government in a reply to a question asked by the Catalan MP Josep Andreu i Domingo about the increase in the price of tickets this year. In its reply, the Spanish Cabinet said that the Balearic Government's proposal ”will be a long process” as it will mean a modification to the existing agreement which declared the interisland routes an obligatory public service.

There also has to be a public tendering process, with the winner having a monopoly on this service ”initially for a period of three years, being compensated by the General State Budget for the difference between the proposed fares and the previous ones”.

The Balearic Government proposed that the Spanish Government should give the Balearics the money directed at the aerial discounts so that they could apply the maximum price of 27.50 euros.

The Spanish Government, however, said that the Spanish Ministry for Public Works to revises the fares within three criteria: the rise in the Consumer Price Index; the authorised increases in air taxes; and the effects of the increases in costs for the airlines.
