THE Spanish Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, yesterday lamented the tragic road accident figures for Easter week, but emphasised that these had to be viewed in perspective and since the driving licence points system came in, one person less had died per day. “If we compare the figures we can see that things are not going badly, but we are not doing enough and we need to do more”, said the Minister.
He also gave other figures to the Senate on being asked by Senator Jose Antonio Sacristan (Partido Popular) about the accident rate during Easter week, which saw a tragic total of 106 deaths.

Perez Rubalcaba said that in 2006 there were 1'000 fewer people killed in road accidents than in 2003.
During the last three months 120 fewer people died in comparison with the same period in 2006 and in April the reduction was 31.
