CAMPOS
CAMPOS Town Council were not mixing words yesterday when they announced: “The consumption of alcoholic drinks out on the street, in town squares and any other public place, including beaches and bathing areas, is expressly forbidden.” The sale of such drinks at beach bars in the locality will not be stopped, but those consuming them have to do so within the confines of customer seating areas.

The new restrictions emerged with other new bylaws after Campos Town Council held their last full plenary session. Such measures fall within the so-called “General Policing” category which covers the imposition of fines related to misuse of public spaces; local traffic offences; abuse of historic, artistic and cultural heritage; and even including treatment of animals and livestock. The bylaw related to alcohol restrictions has been influenced by “bad press” given to public drinking in large numbers, such as that witnessed in the “botellon” - or street parties, often in Palma, where crowds of young people gather to drink cheap alcohol mixes. The new restriction will serve as a tool for the Council when it comes to imposing control on impromptu summer parties on the beach where alcohol consumption is the order of the day.

The local authorities are now in the driving seat when it comes to cracking down on abuse of public spaces. Because of the new legislation, police are now armed with legal back-up in the event of their having to break up a rowdy gathering on the beach where it is evident that alcohol is being consumed away from licensed beach bars.
