PALMA
THE Balearic government yesterday committed itself to introducing a plan to begin getting the Balearics back to work before the summer starts.
With unemployment at a record level of between 75'000, according to the government, and 100'000 if the unions are to be believed, the Balearic government has come under increasing pressure over recent months to honour its promise made on July 25 last year to introduce measures to combat rising unemployment and help create jobs.

Yesterday, Balearic President, Francesc Antich, and his Minister for Employment, Joana Barcelo, held talks with the new leader of the CCOO Workers Commission, Katiana Vicens, to discuss the current state of the employment market and ways of how it can be improved. Last week, Vicens warned that the local employment market was in danger of going into “meltdown” unless the government stepped in.

Emerging from the meeting, Vicens said that she is confident the government will start taking action within the next couple of weeks and that Antich and Barcelo had pledged to introduce an Employment Plan before the summer.
