THE Partido Popular, now in opposition but tipped to win the next local elections by a landslide, presented their list of candidates on Monday night and most were new faces who have not been tarnished by the corruption allegations which continue to dog the previous Partido Popular administration of Jaume Matas. It was a fresh start for the Partido Popular under Jose Ramon Bauza and a real break with the past.

An opinion poll by our sister newspaper Ultima Hora said earlier this month that the Partido Popular would win by an landslide in both the local government elections, those for the Council of Majorca and the city council. They are also tipped to retain many key councils including Calvia. The former Mayor of Calvia Carlos Delgado is also included on Bauza´s list and he is tipped as a possible minister for tourism or culture. Bauza is promising to put the issue of Catalan in schools at the top of his political agenda and he is promising parents to pick the school of their choice.

The socialists are fielding much the same team with many senior figures from the present local government. It is going to be an interesting election contest and the Partido Popular clearly realise that they have to secure an overall majority otherwise they risk losing out to another coalition.
