Palma.—The regional government plans to revoke the Balearics Autonomous Community's Gold Medal in cases where recipients are judged to have been guilty of corruption or to have displayed forms of “contempt”. Parliament yesterday approved unanimously a motion brought by PSIB, the Balearics wing of the PSOE socialists, one inspired by the “caso Nóos” and the allegations levelled at Iñaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma. Though approved, the government is working on a second draft in which the wording will amend the text proposed by PSIB so that “remove” the award becomes “revoke” the award.

Cosme Bonet, a PSIB deputy, has argued that the government should have the ability to withdraw the gold medal when “exceptional circumstances” that involve “a disgrace to the award” by “people who were models of societal virtue” demonstrate that such people have ceased to be so virtuous. He has cited the case of the “Dukes” of Palma, Urdangarin and his wife, Princess Cristina.

In the parliament's committee on institutional affairs, a deputy for the MES group, Nel Martí, expressed total agreement with the initiative and noted that the Dukes have to be treated in the same way as those with political responsibilities or who are recognised by the Autonomous Community.

The committee has urged the government to keep working in order to approve “as quickly as possible” the final decree that will permit the withdrawal of honours for those convicted of corruption in the Balearics.
