PALM
THE square in front of Palma's Olivar fresh food market is set to bring a touch of green to the heart of the city.
The “new look” being given to the Plaça Comtat del Rossello is now undergoing the final touches in what is essentially a victory for plants and trees over vehicles. Already in place are a dozen or so black poplars alongside a variety of cherry trees which have for some weeks now freshened up what was formerly a somewhat rundown corner of Palma.

The reform work also means that traffic will no longer be running along Calle Bisbe Perello and Calle Velazquez as three quarters of this area has been replaced by paving stones.

The transformation of the square in comparison with how it looked two years ago is tantamount to a complete metamorphosis. Pedestrians will now be encouraged with the approach of vehicles being kept significantly at bay. The works, however, are three months behind schedule. It had been the Infrastructure department on Palma Town Council which had originally announced completion as being scheduled for the end of January this year.

The project was the brainchild of the former ruling council and links up with the pedestrian areas of Calle Sant Miquel. The subterranean parking area remains intact although it is now bordered by a pergola which when covered in foliage will provide shady retreats in summer time.
