PALMA
THREE quarters of businesses in the Balearic tourist sector are expecting a marked improvement in trade this Easter, according to the tourism lobby group Exceltur.

The lobby group, which comprises all of the country's captain's of the tourist industry as well as leading economists and bankers, reported yesterday that the Spanish tourist industry is going to grow by around 2.2 percent this year.

However, some regions, in particular the Balearics, are going to see much greater growth figures.
According to the pre-Easter survey carried out by Exceltur, only 25 percent of the tourist sector in the Balearics remains skeptical about the coming Easter holiday period.

The rest are braced for a bumper holiday season with some resort hotels already reporting that occupancy is well over 70 percent and bookings still coming in.

Exceltur said yesterday that the Balearics is the second most optimistic tourist destination in Spain with regards to the coming holiday season and 36.5 percent of businesses consulted reported that year-on-year revenue during the first quarter of this year has been well up on last year.

Exceltur President, Sebastian Escarrer, said yesterday that there has been a huge surge in demand from foreign markets for holidays in the Balearics and that the ongoing problems in Tunisia and Egypt have also benefited the Balearics and Spanish holiday industry as a whole.
