Banyalbufar.—The Mayor of Banyalbufar, Mateu Ferrà confirmed yesterday that a structural review has been made of some of the steep and difficult accesses to coves, beaches and inlets in the Tramuntana mountain region.

Ferrà said that not only will the sa Pedra de s'Ase, sa Galera and es Cireral roads be resurfaced but safety will also be upgraded for users. The current state of these roads, said the Mayor, is “less than adequate.” Apart from extreme narrowness, some of the dry stone walling bordering the roads is falling into disrepair and hewn rock is tumbling onto the road surface, he claimed.

According to the Mayor, work on the project could begin very shortly thanks to the fact that the money for the improvements has been included in the Council of Majorca's Works and Services department budget four years after the application for funding was first made. Ferrà said that the upgrade had now become “of pressing importance” not just to accommodate tourists but also to guarantee road safety for all users. The points of access are the main roads to the municipality's bathing areas such as Cala Banyalbufar and the small port of sa Pedra de s'Ase.

Safety features, said Ferrà will include widening to allow flow of traffic in both directions and the access of emergency vehicles down to the coves in the event of accident. Banyalbufar town council has given its full approval to the upgrade.
