STAFF REPORTER FOLLOWING reports of violent incidents around the island, including an attack on two Britons in Alaró on Easter Monday, Ramon Socias, spoke yesterday of his “concern” over what appears to be a growing ideology amongst the young that they can only enjoy themselves through drinking.

This misconception, said Socias, is accompanied by the inevitable result of people losing control of their own actions if they have had too much to drink. “If a person doesn't know how to drink or how to control intake of alcohol, then they shouldn't drink at all,” said Socias at a press conference yesterday morning in Palma. He was asked at the same time about an incident which occurred on Palm Sunday in the Port of Alcudia in which two young men - allegedly drunk - brutally attacked 32-year-old Gabriel Marquet. The victim remains in a coma in Son Dureta hospital in Palma. His friends and neighbours have organised a demonstration to show support for him and his family and to condemn the unprovoked aggression. “When people are enjoying themselves,” said Socias, “it's important that they realise how the affects of each drink accumulate.” He added that this common sense should apply at all times, not just when the drinker is behind the wheel of a car.
