PALMA
REFORM work began yesterday on the Plaza de la Porta in Santa Catalina in Palma where more trees, less parking space and resident-only access will restrict traffic circulation in the area.

The Infrastructure department of Palma City Council headed by Francisco Donate will need the rest of the year to complete the remodelling of the square which include putting the rubbish skips underground. Half the current 60 or so parking spaces will be removed and retractable pilons dug into the access roads so that only residents will have access to the remaining spaces. The restriction is a deliberate strategy to promote use of the municipal parking spaces along the Paseo Mallorca.

The same project will include improving access to the Es Baluard museum of modern and contemporary art built into the old city walls that separate Plaza de la Porta from the Paseo Maritimo. Three or four municipal parking spaces close to the museum will be removed to make way for a bus stop which will allow visitors to get off right outside.

Donate said yesterday that the overall aim of the remodelling is to convert the Plaza into a proper town square and “not a roundabout as it is now.” Old, diseased trees are to be removed and new ones planted, all of them pine trees. Pavements will be upgraded with flagstones and the fountain will be restored.
