THE 112 emergency service yesterday reported that, since the start of the year, it has responded to 160 accidents involving cyclists across the Balearics.

The first two months of the year were relatively quiet but in March, 65 accidents occurred and 57 have already been responded to this month as the cycling season really gets under way.

The 112 emergency centre is urging cyclists, and drivers, to be extra careful with the large number of professional and amateur cycling teams and groups from all over Europe making the most of the good pre-summer cycling conditions. 112 are asking for extra safety measures on the roads while recommending to cyclists that they either stick to the cycle lanes or ride in a single file. Sources at the emergency centre also said that cyclists need to indicate more so that drivers behind know what the cyclist's next movement is going to be.

And obviously, reflective clothing and helmets are a must. Palma cycle blow: see over
