MURO
PEOPLE living in a residential area in Muro are at their wits end as a result of continued weekend street drinking parties known locally as the botellón.

Around forty people, fed up with the late night noise and rubbish strewn everywhere have banded together to form an association, “in the hope that,” said one disgruntled neighbour “as a group we can have more effect than as individuals.” The same people are also complaining that the Local Police are offering no support and merely suggest that those who are affected “should go and see the Town Council about it.” Residents have retorted that “the town hall offices aren't open at four o'clock in the morning.” Glasses, bottles, filth, vandelism, syringes in the street are just some of the nuisance factors of the late street drinking session, “but above all it's the noise,” explained the residents' group. “During the week, our housing area is very quiet.” He added that the municipal cleaning teams go into action at eight o'clock in the morning on Sunday but “they never manage to sweep everything up, there's always some rubbish left lying around.” The Councillor in Muro responsible for Fairs and Festivals said that his department is looking at how bars and discotheques adhere to bylaws governing after midnight opening, and that a letter has been sent to the Central Government delegate in the Balearics asking for further police support. “We're working towards finding a solution,” he said.
