POLLENSA
THE Majorcan Socialist Party (PSM) claimed yesterday that recent air force manoeuvres in the Bay of Pollensa were nothing more than a “showpiece” justification for keeping the military base in that part of Majorca open.

The manoevres took place last Wednesday and were attended by heir to the Spanish throne Prince Felipe, but the PSM is saying that the performance was a staged event and that the air force base mostly serves as a holiday resort for European NATO personnel during the summer months.

Biel Cerda, PSM secretary in Pollensa said that “there was a great deal of importance given to the military manoeuvres last week but in reality, they were of little substance.” He suggested that the presence of the prince had given the event a particular kudos but that the manoeuvres could in fact have been staged in any other location. He explained that the PSM had recently called for the opening of the facilities at the base to the public, especially those along the sea front. There have long been claims that the lands now occupied by the military should be returned to the civilians from whom the territory was originally expropriated.

The PSM also does not accept that the sea front walk along the bay of Pollensa should come to an end when it hits the wall of the military base. “It could continue as far as the Punta de l'Avançada lighthouse,” claimed Cerda.
