STAFF REPORTER PALMA City Council is to begin the first phase of the Parc de les Vies next month, a project which will embrace the redesigning of Calle Tomas Lluis de Vitoria and stretch to the end of Calle Jacint Verdaguer as far as the “na Barbara” torrent (dry river bed).

Palma's Mayor, Aino Calvo, was presenting the so-called “green corridor” project yesterday with her Infrastructure Councillor, Francisco Donate. Calvo said the park project was one of the election promises her Socialist party had made prior to being voted into power.

The first phase of the works will be funded by Central Government to the tune of 5.6 million euros and will take six months to complete. The park itself will provide an open-air space for the public of over 31'000 square metres, ultimately linking plaza Espanya in Palma with the suburb of s'Indioteria.

The first phase of the project will involve redesign and construction from Calle Argelaga (on the final stretch of Calle Jacint Verdaguer as far as the “na Barbara” torrent.

Linking the centre with the outskirts
Hence, Calle Tomas Lluis de Vitoria will become a tree-lined avenue divided into two pedestrian lanes, each of 2 metres wide. The works will progress under the ring road until they reach a council-owned plot of ground, prior to the torrent. They will include a pedestrian crossing over the train line which will link up with the Son Fortesa Nord neighbourhood.

In the second stage of development, the “green corridor” will extend from the torrent as far as the Son Fuster roundabout and afterwards towards s'Indioteria.

The third and final phase will be the sprucing up of the most built-up area of the park, from the Son Fortesa roundabout (Calle Argelaga) as far as the Railway Bridge, linking up with the Parc de ses Estacions which faces plaza Espanya.

According to City Hall, the total cost of the Parc de les Vies will be 15 million euros plus the money required to expropriate private land.
Aina Calvo said that the park was the finest possible way to link up the central neighbourhoods of Palma with those on the outskirts of the city.
