Palma.—The Balearics received a total of 547'955 foreign tourists by the end of March, a rise of 10.9% over the same period in 2012. Information from the Frontur surveys of tourism movement indicate that the German market has shown a particularly significant upward trend.

The rise in the Balearics was the highest among the various regions of Spain, and in March, the islands received 327'079 tourists, an increase of 16.8%.

At national level, 9.4 million foreign tourists came to Spain in the first quarter, a 2.3% increase of 210'000 visitors. The French and Scandinavian markets were particularly strong. Respectively, they rose by 11.4% and 11.8%. The UK, on the other hand, registered a fall of 0.7% between January and March. German tourism increased by 3.7% across Spain as a whole.

The Canary Islands, despite a small decline, still received 30% of tourists, the largest percentage among the different regions, while Catalonia was up to 24.8%. In March alone, 3.8 million foreign tourists came to Spain, a rise of 7.9% and one that was partly influenced by the earlier Easter this year.
