MEMBERS of the Association of Majorcan Tourist Shops and Service Companies (Acotur) yesterday held a demonstration outside the headquarters of both the Spanish Government's Representative to the Balearics and the Spanish and Majorcan Socialist parties.

A spokesman said that they will continue with their protests every Tuesday, until they are given permission to sell tobacco, which they say is one of their chief sources of income.

The sale of tobacco was banned under tough anti-smoking laws, but shops in tourist resorts believe that they should be exempted from the ban.
The Association said that about 180 people took part in the demonstration and said that it had been called in response to the silence from the Tobacco Commission, the Parliamentary Socialist spokesperson, Francina Armengol and the leader of the Balearic Socialists, Francesc Antich.

Acotur underlined that the Spanish Government “is planning an appeal against the Balearic law which allows us to sell tobacco”.
The Tobacco Commission said that the legal position is being studied.
