EXPERTS at the Balearic University (UIB) are to draw up a white paper analysing in depth the existing situation of tourism in the Balearics, and the prospects of its development during the next few years.

It comes 20 years after the first white paper was compiled.
The study, which should be ready in 12 months, is an initiative which is the fruit of a collaboration between the Balearic Institute of Strategic Tourism (INESTUR), the Official Majorcan Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navegation, the “Sa Nostra” bank and the University itself.

Joan Gual de Torrella, President of the Chamber of Commerce, said yesterday after the signing of the collaboration agreement for the development of the study, that the first study became an academic and company reference point.

He added that it was necessary to compile a new one because “during this time tourism products have changed, there is more competition and the sector is more complex”.

The work will be coordinated by Antoni Riera Font and Eugeni Aguilo, both UIB professors.
They will be in charge of putting the work to a follow up commission, composed of members of the four institutions, the structure of the study, and the selection of the rest of the Univesity professors who will write reports for the study.

The coordinators will also be in charge of making sure that the individual analyses are put together in a coherent and harmonious manner and the follow up commission will examine the scientific accuracy of the different works.
