A 75-YEAR-OLD man was killed in a horrific traffic accident on the Alcudia to Can Picafort road yesterday.
The accident, which involved two articulated lorries and the Volkswagen Golf being driven by 75-year-old Miguel Mateu Roig from Binissalem, occurred at midday at the Avenida Tucan junction near the local sewage plant.

Fire fighters from the stations in Alcudia and Inca were called to the scene to rescue the victims inside the vehicle which was trapped under one of the two lorries.

The Guardia Civil and Local Police were on the scene within a matter of minutes, as were three ambulances and a doctor from a nearby surgery, and cordoned off the disaster scene.

According to the 061 and 112 emergency services, there was little which could have been done to have saved the life of the 75-year-old.
But, of three other victims, only one needed to be admitted to Muro Hospital for treatment while the two others were cared for by paramedics at the scene of the tragedy and eventually allowed to return home.

According to the primary investigation, it appears that Roig ignored a stop sign and apparently drove straight into the path of one of oncoming lorries driven by 41-year-old Antonio T.G. He was unable to avoid the Golf and the two vehicles then collided with another lorry.

Both lorry drivers suffered minor injuries while one of their colleagues needed to be taken to Muro Hospital.
The accident blocked the road for most of the afternoon and the Mayor of Alcudia was on hand to see the extent of the damage for himself and offer any help needed to the victims who escaped with their lives and the family of the 75-year-old.

The death of Miguel Mateu Roig takes the total number of people killed on the Balearics roads this year to ten.
Crash investigators were still at the scene yesterday evening.
