STAFF REPORTER FROM this year onwards, Palma City Council will fund 90 percent of the cost of structural safety checks on buildings for those on a low income, Yolanda Garvi, Town Planning Councillor said yesterday.

Garvi explained that the cost of a structural survey carried out by Council technicians costs between 200 and 600 euros. The first people who will benefit from subsidies totalling 50'000 euros will be the owners of 3'607 buildings which were erected between 1900 and 1910. It is obligatory that these properties be submitted to inspection this year. All those interested in applying for funding from the middle of next month to the end of September can do so at Council offices in Calle Emperadriu Eugenia 6 and in the Avenidas (Gabriel Alomar 18).

Garvi said that the purpose of providing the financial support is so that no-one, whatever their income, can claim they avoided registering for a structural survey because they did not have the resources. Failure to register for a survey will result in a fine of 600 euros, she added.

Garvi said that last year, only half of the owners of the 2'871 buildings in Palma due for review came forward.
