THE consumption of piped gas fell by 9.73 percent in the Balearics during the first quarter of the year due to the increase in normal temperatures for that time of year.

According to Gesa Endesa sources, speaking yesterday, the average temperature was three degrees above the average temperature for the same period in 2006.

They said that the total gas consumption from January to March 2007 was 198'447 megawatts per hour (MWh), and gas demand in March was 61'984 MWh, some 0.61 percent more than in March 2006.

They said that the number of users of piped gas is continuing to rise, as in the first quarter 797 new customers signed up, making a total of 89'103 clients.

The company highlighted its efforts to make piped gas available to the majority of Balearic homes, with activities such as the extension of its supply network with 37 kilometres of new gas pipes in 2006.

These new pipes had cost 4.5 million euros but had allowed the company to extend their piped gas service to Palma, Marratxi, Calvia, Llucmajor, Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, Son Servera and Inca.
