PALMA
FERRY passengers will soon be entitled to the same rights as air passengers.
Time and time again, ferry passengers have been left stranded in ferry terminals, more often that not because of the bad weather, for days in some cases, such as this Easter. The Balearic government has decided that it is high time the maritime transport consumer rights decree is enforced.

Once in place, ferry companies will be obliged to pay passengers compensation, when applicable.
Stranded passengers will also have to be provided with accommodation, food and refreshments in the event of crossings being either cancelled or postponed.

Ferry companies will also be obliged to provide alternative means of transport if the ship is unable to cover its route, and all the ferry companies will have to make sure that their vessels are suitably adapted for disabled passengers.

The Balearic Minister for Health and Consumer Affairs, Vicens Thomas, who is currently caught up in the eye of the storm in the medical strike, said this week that the basic consumer rights of ferry passengers have been ignored for far too long and it is only fair that they are given the same rights as air passengers.

The new Balearic consumer rights decree for ferry passengers is based on the one already in force in the Canary Islands, which is currently the only one of its kind in Spain.
