Palma.— Government officials have decided to keep the Cabrera Sea Life centre open after reaching an agreement with Tragsa, the company in charge of the project.

The centre, which comprises aquariums with over 4'000 species of sea creatures and interactive screens which inform visitors about the local flora and fauna, was opened in 2008 by Elena Espinosa, head of the Environmental department at the time, but passed over in to the hands of the government the following year which, having recorded heavy annual losses ever since, was considering its permanent closure.

Savings
The move will avoid drastic measures and allow the Balearic Nature Reserve departmnt to save around 700'000 euros annually by giving the running of the project back to Tragsa and the Ministry for the Environment. Final details
The two parts will sit down again tomorrow to finalise the contract details. Although there hasn't been any disclosure on the financial details, this decision will mean the government will be required to invest 300'000 euros annually for the duration of the four-year contract (extendable for another two). Promises
The deal also ensures visitors can now visit the centre both in the morning and afternoon as well as a promise to develop the area of Colonia de Sant Jordi where the centre is located, over the next year. Last year the centre registered over 43.000 visitors.
