A total of 56 students took part yesterday in the finals of a competition at the Balearic University (UIB) to select the most promising English speakers of their generation.

The finalists were whittled down from a starting figure of 5'500 and are vying for the prizes of paid study trips to English speaking countries or stays in the so-called “English Summer Camps” of Catalonia. The competition has been organised as part of the Balearic government's policy of encouraging knowledge of a third language other than the compulsory idioms of Catalan or Castillian.
