Palma.—The Balearic Commercial Confederation, was created yesterday by the small retail sector to mount a united front against the large hypermarkets which, they claim, are slowly, killing their livelihoods and jobs.

With the Partido Popular government, having opened its arms to private investors and lifted the restrictions on the construction more out-of-town retail parks and hypermarkets, all of the main retail sectors, which represent some 20'000 businesses, have gathered together to set up the Confederation.

The body's new President, Bartomeu Servera, said that the future of thousands of families is at stake because of the new government's policies and scores of small to medium sized traders are having to struggle to stay alive with little or no help from tax breaks or the banks.
