A total of 123 drivers gave positive breath tests on Balearics roads during the national Special Operation for Alcohol Control.
This was carried out by the Traffic Department between June 5 and 18 to make citizens aware of the risks of drinking and driving. Nearly nine drivers a day were above the permitted limit of alcohol in the blood for driving. This figure represents 1.9 percent of the total of 6'283 breath tests carried out by Traffic officers during the two weeks of the special operation, according to the chief of Road Safety at the Balearic Traffic Headquarters, Antonio Femenia. During the first week (June 5 to 11) 71 drivers tested positive from the 3'568 tests given on the islands roads, while the 52 remaining were from the second week, when 2'715 tests were carried out. Femenia said that, in spite of the number of drunken drivers, there is more awareness that drinking and driving should not be mixed.
