STAFF REPORTER THE Majorcan Farmers' Union has given its backing to the application being made by the Council of Majorca to have the Tramuntana mountains listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Union's General Secretary Gabriel Torrens and Coordinator Matias Morro yesterday signed the declaration of support at a ceremony hosted in Palma by President of the Council of Minorca, Francina Armengol.

Territory Councillor, M.Lluïsa Dubon said that it was “very positive” to have the backing of the Union as it was an implicit recognition of the work the farmers had carried out in the Tramuntana mountains over generations. “It is due to the care that farmers have shown to the environment that we have now inherited such a magnificent landscape,” claimed Dubon.

Other political and cultural organisations are giving their support to the campaign including the Spanish Geographic Society, the Balearic College of Architects and ideologists Douglas Mander and Jerry Thompkins.
