A TOTAL of fifty people have died as the result of the 45 road accidents that have so far occured this year in the Balearic Islands, according to the Traffic Department. The same department attributes half of these road deaths to drugs, alcohol and inadequate speeding.
In fact, 22 out of the 45 road deaths were due to alcohol or drugs, and a further 12 were caused by the driver being distracted.
There is a prevalence of under 30 year olds involved in this year's road accidents, for example 23 out of the 50 road deaths were people under the age of 30 years. However the traffic authorities report that there have been less road deaths registered so far this year if compared to the same timeframe in 2004.
June was the worst month for serious road accidents in the Balearic Islands as there were 11 deaths, followed by May (9), then April (8) and February (8). Between 1994 and 2004 there have been 1'419 road deaths on the islands roads, the report said.
