PALMA airport has stepped up security at its terminal building by installing new waste bins with see-through liners, the Spanish National Airports Authority (AENA) said yesterday.

In a statement, AENA explained that the transparent bins, which aim to discourage threats to public safety, are being introduced right across the European Union. The bins are being set up in both the arrivals and departure zones, in areas where there is the greatest passenger movement.

New ashtrays are being installed outside the terminal building to discourage smokers from treading cigarette ends into the pavement, added AENA.
