Palma.—Over half of the businesses that took part in a survey by the Small and Medium Trade Association (Pimeco) revealed their takings last month were better than during the same period the previous year, something that 15% of them, who also took part on another survey prior to the sales period, were already expecting.

Some shops (15%) said they failed to surpass the figures from 2012, while 31% said their sales were more or less around the same, an improvement, considering that before the sales started only 23% were confident that their takings would be equal and 62% actually feared they would not be able to match 2012's results. Shops that cashed in below expectations pointed out that the main reason for the bad results was that there were less customers coming into their shops (34%), while 66% claimed that the affluence was not the problem, but the lack of spending power.

Traders not convinced despite results
Despite some positive figures most businesses remain apprehensive about their August takings.
Some 15% believe things will improve, but 23% and 62% of them are not so confident and say that figures will either be the same or will probably get much worse. Overall 45% of traders in Majorca said their expectations on how trade would develop during July was pretty much what they were counting on, while 55% were not convinced and claimed it was worse that what they predicted.

Given the results PIMECO said they hoped to see steady growth in August, as the sales continue, and that this could be spread slowly to the Winter/Autumm collection later this year.
