THE British Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman yesterday presented the Majorca Daily Bulletin, its founder and Chairman of the Grup Serra media organisation, Pedro Serra and Editor Jason Moore, with a special letter of commendation for the services Spain's only English language daily newspaper has provided to the British community, both residents and visitors, since it was founded nearly 50 years ago in 1962.

Looking ahead to the newspaper's milestone 50th anniversary in 2012, the Ambassador used his first official visit to Majorca to present the letter of commendation to the Bulletin directors and its staff.

The Ambassador is no stranger to newsrooms and journalists.
His brother Jeremy Paxman is the Newsnight presenter and one of his daughters is also a journalist, so the Ambassador was interested to hear how, and why, the Bulletin was founded and to visit the newsrooom to meet the journalists and some of the key columnists, such as former editor Andrew Valente and Ray Fleming, and to discuss the philosophy of the newspaper and learn about how it comes together.

Toasting the Bulletin's continuing success, the Ambassador was presented with a number of books about the island's art, culture and countryside many of which have been written by Pedro A. Serra.

The Ambassador was most interested in discussing the legacy left in Majorca by the likes of Robert Graves, George Sand and Joan Miró and is keen to visit the island's art museums, including Can Prunera in Soller, Robert Graves' house in Deya and the Cartuja in Valldemossa.

His visit included a tour of the Paseo Mallorca headquarters which also houses the Bulletin's sister papers Ultima Hora and dBalears.
