POLLENSA
STARTING today and running until Sunday in Pollensa, AMAFESTIVAL is an international programme designed to raise awareness of the condition of women in society, their achievements in the face of prejudice and inequality, through music, poetry, theatre, photography, live address and audiovisual information.

Funds generated by the festival, which also includes a wide variety of workshops and activities for children, will go to the Association of Friends of Cala Carbo - a non-profit making organisation keen to promote environmental conservation and cultural projects, amongst which is a scheme to build a house for mothers and children in Banani in Mali. Another high-profile campaign is to bring about the eradication of what it considers to be the barbaric ritual of cutting female genitalia practised in countries such as Ethiopia to control women's sexual relations. A host of local, national and international artists have come together for no charge to actively support the initiative and over a period of four days will project their vision of the contribution that women make to society from several perspectives. A major aim of the event is to foment worldwide acknowledgement of how women have helped develop the world in which we now live over the course of history. Pollensa will become a “female universe,” an unorthodox moment in time where attendees and protagonists will have the chance to exchange views on domestic violence, love, sexuality, motherhood, alternative religion, etcetera, at a series of conferences which will be held from 4pm onwards on Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August. On each of these days the evenings will be filled by performances from theatre companies CIA Xicana, Mandarina, Mamma Porca, a monologue by Vivian Caoba, poetry readings by Maite Brazales, and a female music group L'Ombra.

On a daily basis there will be workshops and activities for all sections of the public, from flamenco dancing to sexual education exclusively for women, clothes recycling, African dancing and self-respect groups. For more information e-mail: info@amafestival.org
