.—The Director of the Pilar and Joan Mirò art foundation in Palma resigned last night as it emerged that a double sided painting by the top Catalan artist had "gone missing." The piece of art, valued for insurance purposes at 450,000 euros, is believed to have "disappeared"more than a year ago. Director Elvira Cámara said that she had been informed that a valuable piece of art was missing when she took up her post in January last year.

However, she said that she was convinced that the missing painting would be found and therefore didn’t tell her superiors on the city council.

Last night the city council announced that they had contacted the National Police over the "lost art work." Cámara said that she was deeply sorry and said that she had kept quiet in an effort to avoid the foundation any embarrassment.
