PALMA
A total of 18 lives have been lost on the Balearic roads this summer, four more than last year, and a new “clunk-click” campaign is about to be launched across the whole country which has witnessed a dramatic rise in road deaths this year.

This year, 38 people have died in the Balearics for either failing to comply with the law and neither wear a seat belt nor crash helmet. The new seat belt awareness campaign was launched this week and Guardia Civil traffic units are going to be mounting spot checks on Balearic roads over the coming weeks to enforce the law. “There are many reasons to wear a seat belt. You decide” is the slogan for the new campaign and the primary aim is to increase awareness of the need to wear a seat belt.

Central government delegate to the Balearics Ramon Socias admitted yesterday that the traffic authorities are quite surprised by the ignorance of drivers to the benefits of buckling up. “We're not just talking about the loss of three points for not wearing a seat belt, we're talking about the loss of lives,” he said.
