AN Episcopal Conference may decide that measures need to be taken in churches to guard against the spread of swine flu, a spokesman for the Diocese of Majorca said yesterday.
Eugeni Rodriguez, media and communications director for the Diocese confirmed that the Churches of Majorca won't take any action until the Conference has come to a decision. He added that apart from the Parish Church in Bunyola where Holy water has been removed from the font, there is no evidence that other places of worship have followed suit. Rodriguez claimed, however, that there would be no problem if other Churches wanted to do so. Other measures which might be taken are to prohibit exchanging handshakes with other members of the congregation which currently forms part of the Mass, and also to prohibit that the bread blessed by the Priest for Communion be put directly into the mouth of a worshipper.
Nevertheless, Parish Churches in Palma, anxious to avoid alarm, are hoping that the results of the Conference will make it clear what hygiene recommendations should be followed.
