THE fight by the people of the Balearic Islands to keep the right to a 50 percent discount on inter-island flights and connections with the mainland will be taken to the heart of Central Government next week.

Pere Sampol, the “Bloc” coalition Senator representing the Islands will be asking the Minister for Public Works, Jose Blanco, next Tuesday, if he would clarify whether or not there is going to be a change in the rights that Balearic European Union citizens have to air travel discounts. “It's important the Minister makes clear what his intentions are,” said Sampol “and if he is in fact going to reduce them after all, we need to know by how much.” The Senator said he will be representing what he described as the “unanimous opposition” by all political parties and social organisations in the Balearic Islands to any reduction of the discount.

Not only has “alarm” been generated in the islands by the possibility of a reduction but were there any withdrawal of discount rights, it would have a knock-on effect on business, claimed Sampol.
